A 26-year-old Cypriot, who was pronounced clinically dead after a serious road accident, is giving hope to three patients in Cyprus and two in Greece, who will be receiving his vital organs.
The kidneys are being transplanted to two patients in Cyprus at the Paraskevaidion Transplant Centre by doctor George Kyriakides.
The first transplant to a 42-year-old man has been concluded. The second receiver is a 41-year-old woman.
At the ophthalmologic clinic of the Makarios III Hospital the victim’s cornea is being transplanted to a compatible receiver.
The heart and liver of the 26-year-old were flown to Athens on a special flight on Wednesday night and were transplanted to two patients.
The family of the 26-year-old gave their consent for the transplants of his organs when the doctors informed them that he was clinically dead.
Minister of Health Costas Kadis said he was touched by the decision of the family.
”This act on behalf of the family has touched me.
I wish to congratulate them warmly and to express my condolences to the family of this young person,” the Minister said.
