Paphos drives business growth

Paphos led the way in business growth in 2000-05, according to the Statistical Service’s second volume of the Census of Establishments which was carried out in 2005.

The Report gives information on the distribution of establishments and employed population in Cyprus by geographic region and branch of economic activity.

In addition results for the foreign workers in Cyprus are presented by district.

The main findings of the Census are as follows.

The largest increase in the number of establishments between 2000-2005 was recorded in Paphos district 25%, followed by Lefkosia (Nicosia), Larnaka 10%, and Lemesos (Limassol) 8%.

The largest increase in employment in the five-year period 2000-2005 was also recorded in the district of Paphos at 38.4%, followed by Ammochostos (Famagusta) at 22.8%.

In the districts of Lefkosia and Ammochostos the share of women amounted to 46% of the total employment, Lemesos and Pafos accounted for 44% and Larnaka district 41%.

According to the census, 34,925 foreign workers were enumerated in 2005, compared to 20,384 in 2000, recording an increase of 71%, or 11.4% per year.

About 35% of the foreign workers enumerated in 2005 were employed in Lefkosia district, 25% in Lemesos, 22% in Pafos, 12% in Larnaka and 6% in Ammochostos district.
