The number of eggs for hatching placed in incubation in Cyprus in May reached 143,100 eggs for laying and 1,410,600 eggs for meat. Both eggs for laying and eggs for meat recorded a decrease compared to the previous month. But compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the eggs placed in incubation for laying recorded an increase of 29.8%, whereas the eggs for meat recorded a decrease of 26%.

The chicks used for laying increased to 63,000 from 21,460 in May. Also the chicks used for meat increased to 1,343,840 from 1,248,680 in the previous month.

Compared to the corresponding month of 2006, chicks used for laying recorded an increase of 4.3%, whereas the chicks used for meat recorded a decrease of 2.4%.

 

Cow’s milk

The production of cow’s milk for May increased to 12,400 tonnes from 12,360 tonnes in the previous month. The collection of cow’s milk increased by 4.8% compared to the same month of the previous year.

The quantities of milk products for December reached 6,010 tonnes of drinking milk, 280 tonnes of cream, 390 tonnes of acidified milk, 50 tonnes of butter and 160 tonnes of cheese.

 

Meat

 

The number of animals slaughtered in March recorded an increase for all kinds of animals, compared to the previous month. Consequently, the total weight (meat) of every kind of meat followed the same trend recording respective increases.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, slaughterings have the following changes for each kind of animal: cattle +16%, pigs +17.7%, sheep +102%, goats +120% and poultry +9.7%.
