Dr Alan Waring, a Cyprus resident and regular contributor to the Financial Mirror through his ‘Risk Watch’ column, has been appointed an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy at the Hong Kong Baptist University Business School. Recognized internationally as a consultant in enterprise and corporate risk management, Dr Waring advises and assists industrial, commercial and governmental organizations in Europe, Middle East and Asia.

In recent years, he has presented several conference papers in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong and travels frequently around the Asia-Pacific region on consulting business. His next paper will be in August in Hong Kong at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Corporate Governance Conference with the theme of Governance and Performance of Family Businesses.

As in Cyprus, this is a highly topical subject in Asia since many large publicly listed corporations remain family-controlled. The separation of CEO and chairman roles and the quality and strength of independent non-executive directors are particularly controversial. Dr Waring’s paper will draw comparisons and identify general lessons.

Last year, Alan Waring ran a 2-day course on Business Risk Management for senior executives at Cyprus International Institute of Management.
