Cyprus Foreign Minister Yiorgos Lillikas has inaugurated a new Europe Direct Information Centre in the southern coastal town of Limassol, to provide information about European Union issues to the inhabitants of Limassol and Paphos, on the west.
Lillikas said that Europe Direct Service provides to the Cypriot citizens the chance to obtain information about the institutional instruments of the EU, its laws and policies as well as opportunities for EU funding through participation in European programmes.
He noted that the fact that the Centre was operating from the Municipality of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, temporarily housed in premises in Limassol, “gives the clear message to everybody that the occupied municipalities constitute an indispensable part of Europe and their citizens have the same rights as all other European citizens.”
Lillikas said “we are not going to abolish these rights, despite the fact that the Turkish occupation army deprives our refugees of their rights to freedom, ownership and other human rights, which will be restored once the 33-year old Turkish occupation comes to an end.”
The Foreign Minister said that we should demand our rights consistently and persistently, within the EU, to see them restored.
Press and Information Office Director Yiannakis Solomou referred to the supervising role of the PIO as regards the operation of these centres, underlining the importance of EU strategy on information and communication in Cyprus.
