The two-day Euro-Mediterranean meeting of Left Parties, hosted by Cypriot AKEL party in Nicosia, wrapped up here today with the approval of two resolutions, regarding the Cyprus problem and the Palestinian question, with special reference to the formation of a Palestinian national unity government between Hamas and Fatah.
In statements after the meeting, AKEL Spokesman Antros Kyprianou said the Nicosia meeting agreed on setting up a committee which will prepare the next Euro-Mediterranean Meeting of Left Parties.
According to Kyprianou, the two-day meeting focused ”on the Cyprus problem, the situation in Iraq, four years after the US-led coalition invasion, the Palestinian issue and the threats expressed by the US against Iran, giving special emphasis on the causes which lie behind the efforts of the United States and their allies to control the region”
”We have ascertained that it is necessary to intensify our efforts aiming at preventing, if possible, the existing plans for our wider region,” Kyprianou added.
On Cyprus, the left parties reaffirm their support to a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the basis of international law, UN resolutions on Cyprus and the acquis communautaire, considering that the solution of the Cyprus problem should safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms.
They also look forward to the implementation, ”without further delay”, of the 8 July 2006 agreement between the leaders of the two communities achieved in the presence of the then UN Undersecretary for political affairs Ibraihim Gambari.
”The working groups for the discussion of core issues of the problem, as well as the technical committees for the discussion of day-to-day issues must start working immediately, with an aim to prepare the ground for substantial negotiations and a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem,” the left parties stress in their resolution on Cyprus.
Regarding the Palestinian question, the left parties consider the formation of a Palestinian national unity government as ”a vital achievement of the Palestinian people, that paves the way towards breaking the siege that has big catastrophic effects on the Palestinian Authority and the whole economic and social life in the Palestinian territories.”
They call upon the international community to support and reestablish its relations with the new Palestinian government, ”as long as this government has honoured international resolutions and international standards.”
