Right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY) President Nicos Anastasiades and Deputy President Averof Neophytou were reelected today during the party’s 12th Congress.
Anastasiades and Neophytou were elected unopposed to serve these posts for the next four years.
The party will elect three Vice Presidents and ten members of DISY’s Political Bureau.
Addressing the conference today, Anastasiades stressed that DISY was against Cyprus‘ division and fights for a solution that would reunite Cyprus, within the European family of nations.
He said time was a fundamental factor in efforts for a settlement and that a solution in the long distant future would actually serve partitionist designs.
The DISY leader stressed that Cyprus should undertake initiatives with an aim to break the current stalemate and lead the country to new achievements.
”We support every initiative which brings the two communities (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot) closer together, thus building trust between them. We want to build bridges of understanding and dialogue and demolish psychological dividing walls which are worse than cement walls,” he noted.
Anastasiades said his party would like to see the European Union playing an active role in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.
At the same time, he said DISY ”considers the formation of a common strategy and common decisions with Greece as indispensable.”
