The World Trade Union Organisation’s European Regional Office issued today a petition demanding the strengthening of the welfare state and the protection of regulated labour throughout the European Union.
The Papcyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) hosted today the European Regional Office’s sixth conference in Cyprus, with the participation of 25 delegations from various European countries, as well as PEO members. The conference was followed by a march to the European Commission’s Representation in Cyprus, where a petition was handed.
In the resolution, which was submitted to Head of the Representation Themis Themistocleous, the delegates deplore the promotion of ”growth without social aims, which in the name of the so-called ‘free market’ and ‘pure competition’ facilitates the deregulation of labour relations, the disablement of collective agreements, the devaluation of labour and the degradation of the European welfare state.”
The march was preceded by the meeting at PEO headquarters, which was addressed by AKEL General Secretary and House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, PEO General Secretary Pambis Kyritsis and AKEL EuroMP Adamos Adamou.
