The Lebanon crisis in the summer of 2006, the mobilization of the Cypriot government and the experience gained are the topics of discussion at a seminar organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will take place 15 February 2007.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Alexandros Zenon will address the meeting.
Participants will be briefed by government services and non-governmental organisations on the safe transportation of Cypriot and foreign nationals from Lebanon, the reception centres made available by the Cypriot government, the hospitality and care offered as well as the humanitarian help provided.
Around 50 representatives of crisis management teams from European Union member states and representatives of the European Commission have been invited to participate in the seminar. Participants will exchange their experiences with a view to create a common policy to deal with crises.
Cyprus helped thousands of people fleeing Lebanon, during the recent crisis. A large number of foreign nationals were in Cyprus before departing for their countries.
The seminar will take place at the Holiday Inn, in Nicosia.
