Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Fotis Fotiou announced here Thursday short and long term measures to save water as the island faces a huge drought problem resulting with water in dams decreasing.
The Minister also called on citizens to support the government’s efforts to save water, adding that over-consumption will, from now on, be punished with fines.
In statements after a broad meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture where the water issue was examined, Fotiou said that the government will proceed with the construction of two more desalination plants in Limassol and Paphos that will be ready in two and a half years.
“Wasting water should be punished. We all have to realize that we cannot waste water anymore, especially during this period”, he said.
Fotiou added that the short term measures include cuts in water used in irrigation. Regarding potable water, the Minister said that there will be a campaign to enlighten the public on ways to save water at home and provide incentives to the public to install home units for recycling wastewater.
