Fall in hotel and restaurant unemployment

The number of unemployed persons registered at the District Labour Offices in Cyprus on the last day of November 2006 reached 12,857, a decrease of 565 compared with November 2005.

In the first 11 months of the year, unemployment fell by 325 people to 12,770.

Despite the fall in tourism arrivals this year, the largest fall in unemployment for the first 11 months of the year was recorded in the restaurant and hotel sector, which fell by 530 to 1,841 in Jan-Nov.

The second largest fall was in public administration (mainly the result of retirees taking advantage of the 6-month unemployment allowance). Unemployment in this subsector fell by 194 people to 1,623.

The most comment period of unemployment is 15 days to three months.
