Industry spent CYP 21 mln on environmental protection

Industry spent CYP 21.3 mln on environmental protection activities in 2004, according to the Statistical Service CYSTAT, or 0.29% of GDP, a significant rise from the CYP 15.5 mln pounds or 0.23% of GDP spent in 2003.

This rise is to a large extent attributed to the increased capital expenditures of the state-owned electricity provider, Electricity Authority of Cyprus, said CYSTAT.

On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, the manufacturing industries reported expenditures of CYP 12.0 mln, the mining and quarrying industries CYP 1.0 mln and the electricity and water enterprises CYP 8.3 mln.

In the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products accounted for CYP 3.7 mln, manufacturing of food products and beverages for CYP 3.4 mln and manufacturing of refined petroleum products for CYP 1.5 mln.

By environmental domain, expenditure related to the reduction of air emissions was CYP 12.3 mln, the treatment of waste water CYP 3.8 mln, the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste CYP 3.7 mln pounds, the protection of soil and ground water and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity CYP 1.5 mln and the abatement of noise and vibrations CYP 0.1 mln.
