A leading tracker of online weblogs, or blogs, has released a study estimating that there are now at least 27 mln of the online journals – up a staggering 8 mln from the figure in October 2005.

According to the report by Technorati.com, some 75,000 new blogs pop up every day, and a new one is created every second. Every hour bloggers post 50,000 new entries for a total of 1.2 mln new postings every day.

The “State of the Blogosphere” report estimated that the total number of blogs doubles about every five-and-a-half-months, with the phenomenon now 60 times larger than it was three years ago, said report author Dave Sifry, of Technorati.

The report noted that news spikes drive increased blog activity, but that even on quiet news days, blogs covered almost every facet of human activity.

Many of the bloggers manage to sustain their journals over relatively long periods, the report said, with 13.7 mln bloggers continuing to post 3 months after launching their sites.
