US dismisses northern Cyprus naval base rumours

The US Embassy in Nicosia denied on Monday it had any intention of establishing a US naval base in northern Cyprus, following reports in local newspapers.

“A recent Turkish Cypriot press article indicated that the U.S. intends to establish a naval base in the north for its 6th Fleet ships. There is simply no truth to this report,” said the statement.

“The U.S. Government has a long standing policy of opposing the militarization of Cyprus, and remains committed to the reunification of the island through a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation, established by a negotiated agreement supported by majorities on both sides.”
