Bird flu another excuse for Cypriots to fight

The outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Turkey has given Cypriot politicians across the divide another another opportunity to show their brotherly love.

Government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said “contacts are being held with the occupation regime, in the framework of the Veterinary Services, on this issue.”

However, comments by Chrysostomides suggest that there already appear to be arguments between the (Greek Cypriot) Republic of Cyprus government, the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and premier of the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ferdi Soyer.

“What does not seem to satisfy Talat or Soyer is the fact that the so called authorities of the occupying regime are not recognised,” said Chrysostomides.

Chrysotomides said “we have shown every good intention of cooperation with the Turkish authorities, in the framework of the EU, of which Cyprus is a member and to which Turkey wants to accede.”
