A policeman died early Sunday and 30 people were injured in fan violence around a league match between Cyprus top clubs AEL Limassol and APOEL Nicosia on Saturday night.

The policeman, a member of the elite MMAD special unit, reportedly died of a stroke after being hit with stones by fans after the match at Limassol’s Tsirion stadium which ended 1-1. Five fans were held and appeared in court on Sunday.

Police, who were deployed in force with 400 officers, used teargas and batons to disperse the violent fans who had started clashes even before the match began.
