The Republic of Cyprus has taken increased security measures at the ports of Limassol and Larnaca, after two Israeli flagged cruise ships that were due to travel to Turkey changed their course and docked at Limassol port, following information by the Israeli authorities that their safety was in danger.

The cruise ships heading to Attalia, Turkey, anchored at Limassol port, whereas two other Israeli cruise ships that followed their regular schedule docked at Larnaca port. In both ports and in the areas surrounding them the Cyprus authorities have taken extra security measures.

Port Police Commander Antonis Siakalis told CNA that all four Israeli flagged cruise ships will depart this afternoon and return to Israel.

He added that no details were given as to the nature of the dangers and expressed the view that due to the situation in Turkey “there seem to be information that Israeli tourists consist a target and for this reason the Israelis have chosen Cyprus.”

“We have taken extra security measures, we have increased our staff at sea and land at the ports,” Siakallis said.
