The continuing strike by “A” Class truck drivers, now in its third day is set to bring the vibrant construction industry to a stop, due to lack of raw materials such as cement, steel, aluminium and other necessities.

Following intensive consultations between the Construction Industry Employers and the PEO and SEK trade unions, it was mutually decided that from Monday, construction companies had the right to temporarily stop operations and layoff their workers, citing a provision in the collective agreements giving them such an option for disruption of work caused by outside interference, such as the strike by the truck drivers.

The Chairman of the Employers Association, Demetris Sampson said the damage to the industry from the strike was estimated at CYP 3 mln a day.
