Amateur fishermen and villagers are concerned over reports that Cyprus police are searching for a pair of crocodiles let loose in the island’s largest dam, reports said Wednesday.

Police are investigating reports that a foreigner living near the Kourris dam, may have let loose a pair of crocodiles after he found the Cyprus heat and confines of his home were not suitable for the tropical animals he had imported a year earlier, the Phileleftheros newspaper reported.

Fishermen and villagers surrounding the dam, that is not fenced, have been warned to look twice before they net their catch.

The Fisheries Department and the Minister of Agriculture, Timis Efthymiou, are expected to attend an emergency meeting to deal with the issue, the newspaper reported.
