The Greek Sale at Sotheby’s fetched GBP 2.86 mln in the Spring auction in London on Thursday of modern and past masters, contemporary and 19th century Greek painters.

The highest price went to Nikiforos Lytras’ oil on canvas “In the Kitchen” from a private collection in Scandinavia, that sold for GBP 422,400, three times the estimated auction price of GBP 100,000 – 150,000. It was bought by the father of the present owners.

The second best-selling painting was “The Burning of a Turkish Frigate” a scene from the War of Independence in 1821 by Constantinos Volonakis, sold by a private collection in Greece to another in Spain for GBP 400,000. This also exceeded its initial estimated price of GBP 200,000 – 300,000.

Other paintings included works by Parthenis, Papaloucas, Engonopoulos, Fassianos, Pavlos and others.
