The Council of Ministers appointed the chairman and vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways as well as two new members.

The new Chairman is Lazaros Savvides, current Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior, who replaces Constantinos Loizides who resigned on Wednesday.

The new vice chairman is former Health Minister Frixos Savvides, who replaces Achilleas Kyprianou.

Andreas Trokos, of the Planning Bureau, and Takis Fekos, businessman and member of the Board of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, are the new members of the Board, to replace Christos Taliadoros, who was appointed Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, and Christos Papaellinas who resigned.

The recent spade of resignations at the Board comes in the wake of a decision by Cyprus Airways management to make 22 senior air stewards redundant and subsequently withdraw the decision.

This is the first time in the history of the troubled airline that the government, as the largest shareholder is appointing a civil servant.

Communications Minister Haris Thrasou said the appointment of Lazaros Savvides gives the message that the government wishes to follow the events closely and is part of the effort to save the airline.

Thrasou added that strategic rescue plan remains the only credible option on the table and needs to be implemented fully.
