Russia satisfied with economic and trade relations with Cyprus

Russian Minister of Agriculture Alexey Gordeev said he was pleased with the development of the economic and trade relations between Cyprus and Russia.
The Russian Minister, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, was received by President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos. Earlier the Russian Minister began consultations with Cypriot EU Commissioner for Health, Marcos Kyprianou.
Gordeev also held talks on agricultural issues with his Cypriot counterpart, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, Fotis Fotiou, during which they discussed issues that concern cooperation between Cyprus and Russia in the agricultural sector.
In statements after his meeting with President Papadopoulos, Gordeev expressed great optimism regarding the development of the economic and commercial ties between his country and Cyprus.
“I am very optimistic regarding the development of the economic and commercial relations between Russia and the Republic of Cyprus”, the Russian Minister said.
Gordeev noted that during his meeting with President Papadopoulos and at the consultations he held earlier with his Cypriot counterpart, it was ascertained that “there are no problems regarding our bilateral relations”.
During his meeting with the Cypriot President, the Russian Minister was accompanied by his Cypriot counterpart Fotis Fotiou, Russian Ambassador to Nicosia Andrey Nesterekno and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the EU Vladimir Cizov.
In statements after consultations with his Russian counterpart, the Cypriot Minister said that he asked for Russia‘s support regarding the promotion of Cypriot products in Russia, such as the traditional Cypriot “halloumi” cheese, the Cypriot wine, citrus fruits, potatoes and fish.
Fotiou said that he received reassurances from Gordeev that Russia will support Cyprus in this area.
The Cypriot Minister also noted that they decided to establish a technical committee, in order to examine other issues concerning the research sector, which will be discussed during their next meeting that will take place in Moscow.
During their meeting in the coastal town of Limassol, the two Ministers also discussed the EU – Russian relations and especially problems that emerge by the export of EU agricultural products to Russia.
The Cypriot Minister assured his Russian counterpart that Cyprus would do whatever possible to contribute to the normalization of these relations.
The Russian Minister stressed that ”the Republic of Cyprus is loved in the Russian Federation. We have a lot of tourists coming to Russia and we hope these numbers will increase”, he said.
He also expressed the view that there are good perspectives in importing Cypriot agriculture products in the Russian Federation and vice versa.
