Cyprus January unemployment falls over 2006

The number of unemployed people registered at the District Labour Offices reached 15,041 on the last day of January 2007, marking a fall of 309 people compared with the 15,350 recorded in January 2006.

The fall was mainly in the sectors of manufacturing and construction.

Partly for seasonal reasons, the number of registered unemployed rose compared with December 2006 by 1,631 persons.

The increase was mainly recorded in the sectors of hotels and restaurants, trade and construction but newcomers in the labour market also added to the overall number.

For the whole of 2006, registered unemployment fell by 329 people to 12,824 from 13,153.
