Seminar on the energy challenge in the 21st century

A seminar with the title “The Energy Challenge in the 21st Century” was organised last Monday, January 15 ,in Nicosia, by the British High Commission in co-operation with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.

Experts and consultants from the European Commission, the U.K. and the oil company British Petroleum spoke at the seminar, tackling a number of energy issues.  Opening addresses were made by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Michaelides, the British High Commissioner Peter Millett and the Energy Director of the Ministry of Commerce, Solon Kassinis.

The seminar covered subjects that included the energy market and its challenges, the increasing energy demand and climate change as a consequence of damage to the environment caused by the emissions of production and consumption of energy, as well as the prospects of cooperation between Cyprus and the U.K. in these sectors.

In their addresses, both the Minister and the High Commissioner stressed the importance and significance of the security of energy supply and of the need to reduce harmful emissions.  Also stressed was the need for European co-operation in these issues, as well of global co-operation in the issues of reducing emissions.

The seminar was attended by senior officials of government departments, semi-government and other organisations who work with energy issues.
