Thousands of employers and the self-employed will now be able to pay their social security contributions over the internet online, 24 hours a day. It is hoped that this will save both time and money for people, as well as alleviating the workload of social insurance officers.
The move is part of a drive to streamline the social insurance payments system and cut on red tape.
The new Direct Banking system for insurance payments started operations from December 11, 2006. However, delayed payments must still be made by visiting the Social Insurance offices.
“Instead of all the hassle – finding the right office, waiting in long queues, filling out forms, trying to get parking space – people will now do all this from their homes,” Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Andreas Vassiliou said.
Information on the new payment system is available at the Citizens Help Centre and the following banks: Bank of Cyprus, Alpha Bank, Popular Bank, National Bank, and the Central Cooperative Bank.
