Incumbent mayor Michael Zampelas launched his re-election campaign on Tuesday, focusing his platform on the achievements the capital’s municipality has achieved during his term in office.

Zampelas is running as an independent candidate but expects support from the opposition party, DISY and some from coalition partner DIKO, after communist AKEL proposed Nicosia MP Eleni Mavrou for the elections on December 17.

The two other contestants are art historian Anna Marangou and former ETEK chamber chairman Nicos Mesarites.

Zampelas’ campaign has been dubbed “Our town is changing” and focuses on the public works and upgrading of services in the past four years, as well as the improvement of the municipal finances.

He said that Nicosia has secured a CYP 6 mln loan from a foreign bank to fund the various projects in the capital that include new squares, pavements, efficient sewage systems, better transport, a new Town Hall and improvements to existing facilities such as the Municipal Theatre.
