Microsoft has confirmed plans to release an MP3 player on the market. The hardware and software packages will all be launched under the brand name Zune.

Microsoft said in a statement that “Today we confirmed a new music and entertainment project called Zune. Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year.”

Little details were given, though there is now a blog written by Cesar Menendez, who is working on the project. Analysts are unsure whether Microsoft can successfully take on Apple, as owners of the iPod are generally emotionally attached to it.
