(CNA) Turkey, a candidate member of the EU, has a lot to do until it becomes an equal EU state and the two million Armenians who are EU citizens have every right and obligation to demand that Turkey pays its historical duty towards them, the Armenian Community of Cyprus’ committee in memory of the Armenian Genocide said in a statement.

It noted that the history and facts of the genocide of Armenians by Turks in 1915 are known both in Cyprus and overseas as well as the Armenian people’s efforts for justice.

Referring to the repercussions of the genocide on the Armenian people, the committee said the impunity of Turkey and feeling of impunity creates new criminal philosophies which the humanity experience today.

“The purging of every trace of Armenian presence continues today as well as the refusal to recognize the genocide, something that proves that the genocide itself was a conscious choice for Turkey to establish its policy”, the statement added.

“Today, 91 years after the genocide, many countries have recognized the genocide while others continue not to, because of political reasons and strategic interests, and not because they do not agree with the Armenian peoples’ right”, the committee stressed.

Concluding, the committee said “Armenians demand justice, and justice does not imply a dry ‘sorry’”.
