CYPRUS: No hike in electricity demand

Demand for electricity supply this July was approximately at the same levels as last year, the Director of the Transmission System Operator (TSO) Dr. Christos Christodoulides told the Cyprus News Agency, adding that this year the daily average demand stood at 858MW and the year before at 837MW.

In 2012 the maximum demand was 1,000 MW, therefore there is a decrease of 14% compared to 2014. But this followed the meltdown of the national power system after the munitions blast at the Mari naval blast killed 13 people and decimated the nearby Vassiliko EAC power station.
Dr. Christodoulides pointed out that there is adequate supply, which amounts to 1,465 MW, provided there is no unexpected or sudden damage or outage.
According to Dr. Christodoulides, the total power consumption for the first six months of 2014 is at the same levels as 2013.
The TSO, he explained, has an emergency action plan in case of unexpected power cuts, pointing out that all efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted supply of power.
