Stormy weather hits Cyprus, not just banking sector

Cyprus, dogged by a financial crisis that could see its banks default if an international rescue package is not approved by parliament, was hit by a mild storm Friday, after a week-long pre-Spring lull, with yachts and fishing boats in Paphos harbour damaged from rocking or being washed ashore.

Strong winds and light showers were reported all over the island that has fallen under a low barometric pressure that is expected to continue for a few days.

Lower than normal temperatures were recorded on the coast, dropping to 13 degrees Celsius, some 5 to 7 below the average for the past week.

However, people who have spilled onto the streets to demonstrate their economic hardship as banks have been shut for a week causing major cash flow problems in all areas, felt relieved that the rains washed away the clouds of dust that had been hanging over the island for the past few days.

The Cyprus weather service said in its forecast for the weekend that the weather should clear with temperatures rising gradually to 19 degrees, but dust may return after Sunday.

No serious damage or injuries were reported.
