Unemployment rate in Cyprus climbs to 11.1% in 1Q 2012

Unemployment rate escalated to 11.1% in the 1st quarter of 2012, recording an increase compared to the previous quarter of 2011.

According to the results of the Labour Force Survey, which is carried out in accordance with a European Union Regulation, for the 1st quarter of 2012, the number of employed persons amounted to 386,1 thousand (males 200,5 thousand and females 185,6 thousand) and the number of unemployed persons to 48.2 thousand (males 27,9 thousand and females 20,3 thousand).

The employment rate for persons aged 20-64 was 70.3% (males 75,6% and females 65,5%) recording a decrease compared to the previous quarter of 2011, when it reached 72.1% (males 77.5% and females 67.2%) as well as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, when it stood at 74.3% (males 80.6% and females 68.5%).

The unemployment rate amounted to 11.1% of the labour force (males 12.2% and females 9.8%) recording an increase from the previous quarter of 2011, when it stood at 8.9% (males 9.8% and females 8.0%) as well as from the corresponding quarter of 2011, when it was 7.5% (males 7.4% and females 7.6%).

Also the unemployment rate of young persons aged 15-24 amounted to 26.7% of the labour force of the same age group recording an increase compared to the previous quarter of 2011, when it reached 20.7%.
