Cyprus unemployment continues to climb in October

Unemployment rose again in October, with the number of registered unemployed rising by 6,101 compared with October 2010, or by 29.3% to 26,947.
Unemployment also increased on a seasonally adjusted basis, to 31,022 persons compared with 30,108 in September.
The Statistical Service said that the increase compared with the year earlier was mainly in the sectors of trade (an increase of 1,535), construction (1,227), manufacturing (785), accommodation and food service activities (537), education (373), and transportation and storage (283).
There was also an increase of 600 in unemployed newcomers to the labour market.
The Statistical Service does not produce a registered unemployment rate but the latest EU statistics show an unemployment rate of 7.8% in September, compared with an EU average of 9.8%.
