The health sector contributed 3.8% to the economy in 2009 while the education sector contributed 6.2% according to two annual reports on the health and education sectors for the year 2009 published by the Statistical Service.
Together, therefore, they contributed 10% of gross value added.
According to the report value added at current market prices for the “human health and social work sector” rose by 4.8% to EUR 585.4 mln in 2009 compared with EUR 558.6 mln in 2008.
The contribution of the sector to gross value added was 3.8% in 2009 compared with 3.7% in 2008. Gross output increased by 5.9% to EUR 896.6 mln from EUR 847.0 mln in 2008.
The report on health also provides data on the number of enterprises, employment, labour costs, gross output, value added and gross fixed capital formation.
The most important contribution to total value added was generated through human health activities, at 84.7% for private and 90.0% for public health.
Employment in the sector increased by 3.1% in 2009 and reached 16,749 persons. This accounted for 4.2% of the economically active population (including those looking for work) and 4.5% of the gainfully employed population.
Gross fixed capital formation in the sector increased by 4.1% to EUR 35.3 mln in 2009 from EUR 33.9 mln in 2008.
Investment in new buildings accounted for EUR 15.1 mln; machinery and equipment accounted for EUR 15.4 mln; furniture and fixtures EUR 4.3 mln; and transport equipment EUR 0.5 mln.
Education worth 6.2%
In the education sector, value added at current market prices increased by 7.4% to EUR 946.8 mln in 2009 compared with EUR 881.5 mln in 2008.
Education’s contribution to gross value added rose to 6.2% in 2009 from 5.8% in 2008.
Gross output increased by 6.8% to EUR 1,070.0 mln from EUR 1,002.2 mln in 2008.
In private education, the most important contribution to the total value added was generated by “other education” (presumably private lessons), which accounted for 38.4%.
General secondary education accounted for 18.2%, tertiary education for 15.6% and pre-primary and primary education for 13.3%.
In public education the most important contribution to total value added was generated by general secondary education (46.5%) and pre-primary and primary education (39.4%).
Employment in the education sector increased by 4.2% in 2009 to reach 22,766 persons, accounting for 5.3% of the total economically active population and 5.7% of the total gainfully employed population.
Gross fixed capital formation in education increased by 25.0% in 2009 to EUR 125.0 mln from EUR 100.0 mln in 2008.
Investment in buildings and other works accounted for EUR 62.5 mln, machinery and equipment EUR 29.7 mln, furniture and fixtures EUR 28.0 mln and transport equipment EUR 4.8 mln.
