An awareness campaign is underway this week to try to reduce road accidents predominantly due to mobile phone use while driving, as more than 30% of accidents is due to driver distractions.
The campaign is being organised by the Reaction organisation, Youth for Road Safety and Click youth magazine in cooperation with the Road Safety Council and sponsors MTN Cyprus. Information leaflets will be distributed to children and pupils with the hope that children will ask their parents not to talk on the phone while driving.
Alekos Michaelides, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works, said that “at the end of 2010, the implementation of a six-year Strategic Plan on Road Safety 2005-2010 was completed, and by that time we succeeded to reduce fatal road accidents by 41,7% and injuries resulting thereof by 50,4%, compared to the respective average of 1999-2003.”
MTN Cyprus chairman Nicos K. Shacolas said that the company will continue offering awareness activities, so as to contribute in reducing road accidents in Cyprus.
