Paphos gets ready ready for Cyprus opera

Paphos is getting ready to host the 13th annual opera at the medieval castle this weekend with the National Theatre of Prague performing Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffman”. The harbour area is closed and has been transformed into an open-air stage to host the opera on September 2, 3 and 4.
Ahead of Thursday’s dress rehearsal, the town’s mayor and festival chairman Savvas Vergas said that this year’s event will enrich the cultural ties between the Czech Republic and Cyprus.
He welcomed the Artistic Director of the Opera of the National Theatre of Prague Jiri Herman, the Orchestra Director Zbynek Muller, Director Ondrej Havelka, Set Director Martin Cerny, Choir Director Martin Buchta and the performers who will take to the stage.
Also taking part will be two Cypriot artists, mezzo soprano Tsveta Christoforou and tenor Petros Evangelides.
The event is being sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, the CTO, Kanika Hotels Ltd and Alexander the Great Hotel which will undertake the catering.
The opera will be performed in French with Greek and English super-titles. All performances begin at 8pm sharp.
