Catholics in Cyprus gathered for Holy Mass at the Holy Cross church in Nicosia Sunday to pray for the soul of Pope John Paul II who died on Saturday night.

The crowd comprised mainly of Asian workers and foreign nationals, as well as members of the diminishing Latin community of Cyprus.

A similar service was held in Limassol.

Meanwhile, the Acting head of the Holy Synod, Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos expressed the Church of Cyprus’ grief over the death of Pope John Paul II.

Speaking on Sunday, Chrysostomos wished that “God will rest” Pope John Paul’s soul and hoped ‘the new appointed Pope will be pious, and will work for the good and unity of churches which is the wish and prayer of all”.

He added that the Holy Synod will decide who will represent the Church of Cyprus at the funeral when it is officially informed on the date of the funeral.
