Cyprus trade deficit shrinks in Jan 2010

On the basis of preliminary estimates for foreign trade in January 2010 total imports/ arrivals reached EUR 441.6 mln, of which EUR 275.2 mln were arrivals from other member states of the EU and EUR 166.4 mln imports from third countries.
Total exports/dispatches amounted to EUR 74.0 mln of which EUR 48.4 mln were dispatches to other member states of EU and EUR 25.6 mln exports to third countries.
The preliminary trade deficit for January shrank to EUR 367,643 compared with EUR 373,791 in 2009.
Meanwhile, the Statistical Service of Cyprus has announced that it has published the monthly report “Intra-Extra EU Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)” for December 2009.
The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade were as follows.
Total imports/arrivals (covering total imports from third countries and arrivals from other member states) in January-December 2009 amounted to EUR 5,654.4 mln compared with EUR 7,366.7 mln in January-December 2008.
Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other member states) in January-December 2009 were EUR 963.2 mln compared with EUR 1,190.4 mln in January-December 2008.
The trade deficit was EUR 4,691.2 mln in January-December 2009 compared with EUR 6,176.3 mln in January-December 2008.
During December 2009 total imports/arrivals (covering total imports from third countries and arrivals from other member states) valued at EUR 469.3 mln.
Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other member states), including stores and provisions, in December 2009 amounted to EUR 78.2 mln.
Εxports/dispatches of domestically produced goods, including stores and provisions, were EUR 43.0 mln whilst exports/dispatches of foreign goods, including stores and provisions, were EUR 35.2 mln.
