Cyprus internet subscriptions rose 18% in 2008

Internet subscriptions in Cyprus shot up in 2008, according to the latest data from the Statistical Service.
The number of people with internet access rose to 204 per 1,000 inhabitants in 2008 from 173 in 2007, marking a rise of 17.9%.
Broadband has become the most prevalent type of internet access, covering 88% of total subscriptions in 2008.
Meanwhile, mobile telephone subscriptions in 2008 increased to 1,276 per 1,000 inhabitants compared with 1,219 in 2007.
For the first time since 2000, the number of analogue telephone lines was more or less stable, rising slightly from 486 per 1,000 inhabitants in 2007 to 488 in 2008.

Access at school increases

In 2008 there was a significant increase in the number of computers and the internet access, both in primary and secondary education.
For primary education, the number of computers per 100 pupils rose to 14.9 in 2008 from 8.3 in 2007.
The number of internet-connected computers per 100 pupils was 12.7 compared with 7.0 and the number of internet-connected computers with high speed connections per 100 pupils was 11.9, compared with 5.1 in 2007.
In secondary education, the number of computers per 100 pupils rose to 22.3 from 17.5. The number of internet-connected computers per 100 pupils to 16.4 from 13.5 and the number of internet-connected computers with high speed connections per 100 pupils rose to 16.1 compared with 13.0 in 2007.
In tertiary education, there was a decrease in the corresponding indicators mainly as a result of a significant increase in the number of students.
The number of computers per 100 students fell to 11.9 from 14.5 in 2007.
The number of internet-connected computers fell to per 100 students to 11.6 from 14.2 and the number of internet-connected computers with high speed connections per 100 students fell to 11.5 compared with 13.9 in 2007.
