Cyprus was among 70 countries which have participated in the 55th Summer Fancy Food Show that took place at the Javits Centre in New York, June 28-30.

Director of Cyprus Trade Centre in the US Aristos Constantinou has said that despite the financial recession Cyprus continues to have a good presence at the trade show.

“Certainly exports from Cyprus to the US have been influenced, but the Trade Centre does not stop working and continues to support our products. In comparison with other countries, Cyprus has not been affected as much as others,” he said, adding that “halloumi cheese is a unique product and despite the crisis and the reduction in the American consumer’s purchasing capacity, our exports continue to increase, as the results of the first months of the year show.”

Constantinou said that the participation of companies producing dairy products was bigger and that Cyprus also displayed other products such as honey, salt and spices. Furthermore he noted the particular interest shown in kosher wine «Yian Kafrisin». This wine is used by the Jews during their regional ceremonies.

Director of Cyprus’ wine producers union and of the Cypriot organisation promoting dairy products in the US said that the initiatives that have been undertaken to promote halloumi cheese and Koumantaria wine in the US have borne fruit.

With regard to the Cypriot presence at the Fancy Food Show, Droushiotis said he was pleased to see 11 Cypriot food and wine companies participating.

Filling 316,000 square feet of the Javits Center with 2,300 exhibitors from over 70 countries, the event featured specialty cheeses, olive oil, spices, teas, chocolate and ethnic specialties. Over 600 companies displayed natural and organic items.
