Cyprus must turn to green energy to ease pollution issues, House President Marios Garoyian said addressing a seminar organised by the Cyprus Wind Energy Association and the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation.
The seminar on green energy coincided with Global Wind Day celebrated on June 15 and aims to inform all institutions on the three forms of energy, wind, solar and biomass.
Garoyian said reversing the negative environmental balance and contributing to a new energy environment is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges of our times.
Renewable sources of energy, he said, create new business opportunities, more positions and guarantee stability while at the same time they upgrade the world climate system.
Cyprus, the House Speaker added, has an abundance of natural elements such as the sun, sea and wind which can make the island a “strong player” in the new energy game, strengthening its economic and political position.
Garoyian said that considering the energy revolution in all developing countries and within the EU, Cyprus is called to take drastic measures to face the destruction of the environment and to stop depending, to the extent that this is possible, on mineral fuels. “Achieving energy autonomy strengthens national independence, guarantees a cleaner environment and upgrades the quality of life”, he added.
Garoyian further said that because of the fines which Cyprus faces due to pollution, it is high time to invest in green applications.
“We must understand that the more green energy we produce, the more we reduce our dependence on mineral sources, strengthening at the same time the economy and improving our quality of life”, he concluded.
