Cypriot MP Maria Kyriakou has proposed the preparation of Euro-Mediterranean joint programmes to boost the tourist industry in Europe and the Mediterranean.

Speaking before the 5th Euro – Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly’s (EMPA) Plenary Session, in Brussels, Kyriakou said that the tourist industry is very important for the economies of the Mediterranean countries, adding that joint Euro- Mediterranean programs for the development of that sector could be studied to the benefit of both European and Mediterranean countries.

The Cypriot MP talked about the world economic crisis saying that the impact on the Mediterranean countries may be less visible than in the EU member states, but noted that the impact is there and mainly focuses on the decrease of liquidity, investments and the number of tourists visiting Mediterranean countries, as well the increase of unemployment.

Kyriakou talked about managing the economic crisis, noting the lack of legislation in EU countries and the Mediterranean, which could contribute to the corporate rescue in times of economic failure.

She also underlined the need to enhance economic cooperation and solidarity between the EU and Mediterranean states.
