Between 4-7 June 2009, elections will be held in the member states of European Union for the new members of the European Parliament.

Cyprus will hold elections for six representatives to the European Parliament on Saturday June 6, 2009.

In addition to Cypriots, citizens of the other EU member states residing in the Republic have the right to vote and/or be elected in these elections.

For citizens of other member states to be able to exercise this right they must complete by April 2, 2009 a registration form which may be downloaded from the Ministry of Interior’s web page (www.moi.gov.cy) or may be obtained at the nearest District Administration Office. Wherever the form is obtained from, it must be returned, dully completed to the nearest District Administration Office to ensure that the applicant’ s name is entered in the special electoral register.

In order for an application for registration be accepted, the applicant must include the following solemn statement (Part B) of the form, giving the following details:

(i) the applicant’s nationality ,
(ii) a statement that the applicant has not forfeited the right to vote in his/her native country,
(iii) a statement on where the applicant was last registered for election purposes in his/her native country,
(iv) the address of the applicant’ s usual residence in the Republic of Cyprus,
(v) the date from which the applicant has been residing in the Republic or, if he/she has been residing in Cyprus for less than six months, the previous member state the applicant was residing in,
(vi) that the applicant intends to exercise his/her right to vote only in the Republic of Cyprus,

and accompany it with his/her identity card, issued by the Republic of Cyprus, or the certificate of registration (Form MEU1) or the identity card or passport of his/her native country.

It must be noted, however, that if the legislation of the EU citizen’s native country allows it, the citizen may exercise his/her right to vote for the election of the representatives of his/her native country, but he/she should be aware that no one is allowed to vote twice. For this reason one would have to decide which country’ s candidates one wishes to vote for, in good time.
