The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will hold a new meeting in the context of the UN-led direct negotiations, starting today a discussion on European issues.

UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer will attend the talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

In statements after their last meeting on 5th Μarch, UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun said the leaders continued discussion on property issues and have now referred the matter to the representatives to consider, in tandem with other issues including governance and confidence building measures.

Zerihoun had also noted that the two leaders would now move to EU matters.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are meeting in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations, which began last September with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem. The talks aim at reunifying the island, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.
