University of Cyprus students reach 6.000

The number of students studying at the University of Cyprus (UCY) reached 6.000 in 2009, compared to 5.600 the previous year and 5.100 in 2007.
This was stated before the House of Representatives Committee on Education that discussed the University’s budget for the current year, which provides for revenues of 121.213.925 euro and expenses reaching the same amount.
Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Stavros Zenios, told members of the Parliamentary Committee that in 2009 the procedures would continue as regards the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine.
The University now has six faculties: The Faculty of Humanities, with three departments; the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, with five departments; the Faculty of Economics and Management, with two departments, the Economic Research Centre and the Centre for Banking and Financial Research; the Faculty of Engineering, with four departments; the Faculty of Letters, with three departments and the Archaeological Research Unit; the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education with four departments.
He also said that depending on the available budget, the Library of the University would be enriched.
Regarding the cost for each student, Zenios said that this reaches 12.000 euro.
The rector of the University of Cyprus referred to the absorption of EU funds by the University for Research and other EU programs, saying that this “contributes to the University’s international recognition”.

The University of Cyprus was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cypriot people, and is well placed to fulfill the numerous aspirations of the country.
