Fourth Cyprus Wine Competition to take place

The 4th Cyprus Wine Competition will take place in Limassol from 11-14 March, according to Wine Products Council Director Yiannakis Georghiades.

Speaking at a press conference, Georghiades said that the aim of the competition to secure international recognition was achieved and for the second time round, with the collaboration of the Thessaloniki Wine Competition, the Cypriot competition will be held under the auspices of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) as well as the European Commission and the President of the Republic.

He also said that the competition awards local produce and “recognizes the quality and progress achieved”.

According to the regulations, the 4th Cyprus Wine Competition aspires to provide a forum for European and international recognition which will act as a challenge for Cypriot wine producers.

A total of 136 products from 33 vine producers will be reviewed by a seven-member panel which is comprised of five distinguished foreigners and two Cypriot oenologists. After a three-day round of wine tasting, the panel will present the awards for the best Cypriot wines during a special event on Saturday, 14 March.

The categories of competing wines are White still wines, Rose still wines, Red still wines and Wines with Appellation of Origin.

All wines of Cypriot origin may take part in the competition as long as they are produced and labeled in pursuance of the national and the EU Regulations and in conformity with the definitions of the ''International Code of Oenological Practices'' of the OIV.

Table wines without a geographical indication may participate in the Competition and receive a final rating but they are excluded from the awards and medals.

Local media as well as journalists from the US, Great Britain, Greece and Israel will cover the competition.
