Events to take place promoting Nicosia, Cyprus

The Lefkosia Tourism Development and Promotion Company will organise a series of events under the slogan “come to meet Nicosia” this Saturday, September 27, to mark International Tourism Day.

Speaking during a press conference here Wednesday, the President of the Company and of the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Christodoulos Angastiniotis said that the purpose is to help Cypriots and tourists know Nicosia better, the only divided capital in the European Union.

He noted that the capital, even though it has no beaches, has several other characteristics which can attract tourists such as its long history, museums and monuments and tradition and culture.

The president of the Committee on cultural tourism and events, Titina Loizidou spoke about the programme of events inviting all citizens to take part in this effort to promote Nicosia.

As she said events include free guided minibus tour around the Venetian walls, with stops at various museums, with free entrance for visitors.

There will be also a revival of local arts and crafts of Cyprus’ cultural heritage by the Cyprus Handicraft Service as well a live gastronomic show “Haloumi Cyprus traditional cheese”, where visitors can taste this Cypriot traditional dish.

Visitors could attend the outdoor exhibition of UNESCO “Living Heritage :Exploring the Intangible” and enjoy free walks and guided tours in the old town of Lefkosia.

The events will commence in the morning, with the opening ceremony at Phaneromeni Square, to be attended by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides.
