Western Digital Corp. has announced it has joined The Green Grid, a nonprofit consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems.

The Green Grid – which does not endorse any vendor-specific products or solutions – seeks to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies that will improve overall data center energy efficiencies. Membership is open to companies interested in data center operational efficiency.

One of the best ways WD can make a positive impact on the environment is to help its customers to offer products that consume less electricity and generate less heat.  WD is committed to helping customers deploy leading-edge hard drive technology to reduce power consumption.

“As demand for storage continues to expand, the need for more efficient power solutions becomes paramount to our customers,” said Tom McDorman, WD’s vice president and general manager of enterprise storage. “WD’s innovative Green Power technology makes it possible for large scale data centers to increase storage capacity while minimizing the increase in power consumption, and in many cases actually reduce power consumption.”
