Cypriot painter Andreas Charalambous has been declared an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

A press release, issued today by Cyprus Union of Journalists, said the official ceremony to declare Charalambous honorary member of the Academy took place on November 27, 2007, in Moscow.

Speaking during the ceremony, Vice President of the Academy Dmitri Shvidkovski noted Charalambous’ very close relation with Russia, adding that the Cypriot artist graduated from the Sourikof Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow and later on many of his students, following his steps, also studied at this Academy.

Shvidkovski praised Charalambous’ work noting that the artist had many individual exhibitions and participated in many other collective exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Samples of his work are exhibited in many different countries or are included in individual collections.

Charalambous has in the past been invited to give lectures in Pratt Institute of New York.

He is also well known for his work in theatre as stage and theatre costume designer for more than 25 plays.

The Cypriot painter thanked the presidium of the Academy for this great honour.
