Kampala,(CNA) – President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos has described as satisfactory the reference to Cyprus in the draft resolution of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which begins in Uganda on Friday.

In a statement to CNA, President Papadopoulos said that this was a very interesting meeting, focusing on society changes, in order to help the political, cultural and economic development of countries, as well as climate issues, discrimination and international trade.

He added that the new Secretary General of the Commonwealth would be elected during this year’s CHOGM.

”We expect this session to issue a statement on Cyprus, and from the initial indications we have it is satisfactory for our positions,” the President concluded.

The session begins on Friday with speeches by Queen Elizabeth II, the Prime Minister of Malta, who is presiding over the Commonwealth, and the Commonwealth Secretary General.

The participants will discuss the conclusions from Malta’s CHOGM in 2005, and the reform of the society to achieve economic, political and human development.

During his stay in Kampala, President Papadopoulos will hold meetings with counterparts from Commonwealth member states.
