Macbeth the opera by Giuseppe Verdi, based on William Shakespeare's homonymous drama, will star at this year’s 21st Pafos Aphrodite Festival in a production by the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus.

The opera will be performed on 30, 31 August and 1 September at Paphos Medieval Castle.

Director of the Pafos Aphrodite Festival, Stella Shepi, told CNA that it will be a spectacular production, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Gridiushko, Director General of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus, one of Europe’s largest theatres.

She pointed out that there is increased interest to purchase tickets, especially from countries such as Israel and Russia, while foreign journalists from international tourism and culture magazines are already in Cyprus to cover this important cultural event.

Shepi is confident the whole atmosphere, the spectacular setting and the talented artists from Belarus will wow the audience.

The plot of the opera unfolds in 11th century Scotland and narrates the rising of general Macbeth to the throne after he murders king Duncan and general Banquo.

Accomplice and instigator of these crimes is Lady Macbeth.

There will be simultaneous translation in Greek, English and Russian via subtitles.
